Otospermophilus variegatus in Arizona:
Otospermophilus variegatus is a member of Marmotini, the marmots, prairie dogs, and Holarctic ground squirrels, which is itself a member of Sciuridae, the squirrels. The largest of the Arizona ground squirrels, it is exceeded in size only by the prairie dogs of genus Cynomys. In Arizona, it is found throughout the state in rocky areas, but can otherwise be found in a variety of habitats, plant communities, and elevations.
