General
: Hairy annual, 10-40 cm tall; stem erect.
Leaves
: Opposite near base and alternate above; lanceolate, with entire margins and pinnate venation.
Flowers
: Solitary in leaf axils, on pedicels 5-10 mm long; calyx lobes 5, +- equal; lower lip of corolla with maroon spots; corolla base sac-like, lips flaring, +- fan-shaped, lower lip base swollen, closing throat; stamens 2, included, anther sacs 1 per stamen, staminodes 2.
Fruits
: Capsules obliquely ovoid, fragile, 10-12 mm long; chambers dehiscent by 1--2 large pores near tip. Seed: ovate, flat, smooth; wing incurved, +- cup-shaped.
Ecology
: Gravelly or sandy desert slopes, washes; Elevation: < 1250 m. flowers Mar-Apr.
Distribution
: southern California: southern Nevada, western Arizona, northwestern Mexico.
