Muck bottom in 0-2 meters of water where it often forms dense canopies with white water lily. Common assoc.: (Nymphaea odorata) white water lily, (Najas flexilis) bushy pondweed, (Vallisneria americana) wild celery.
Relatively common in most sheltered shoreline areas; especially only the lakes's eastern shoreline. It prefers a firmer bottom than Nymphaea odorata.
